PSA: Your Passport May Not Be Valid in Some Countries, Even If It Hasn’t Expired Yet
Before going on an international trip, make sure you check the expiration date of your passport. Even if your return date has already expired, you may still be denied exit, depending on the country you are visiting.
CBC News notes that many countries require a passport to be valid for a certain amount of time after the end of a visit to their country:
This rule is intended to ensure that a visitor who unexpectedly needs to stay longer than originally planned still has a valid passport in order to leave the country. Some countries require passports to be valid for at least six months after the end of the stay.
Therefore, if your passport expires after 70 days, you may have problems en route to France, for which passports must be valid for 90 days after the return date indicated on your ticket.
While this is not a new rule, you may not be aware of it if you do not travel the world often and think that your passport is valid due to its expiration date.
One couple in CBC News history lost thousands of dollars to this problem because they had to change flights and interrupt their dream vacation. To prevent this from happening, before traveling, familiarize yourself with the country’s passport requirements.
