No, Red Cars Do Not Require Additional Insurance

We’ve probably all heard this once: if you have a red car, you pay more for auto insurance. Of course, some cars are more expensive to insure, but the color has nothing to do with it.

Personally, I’ve heard this several times throughout my life, and the reasoning has ranged from “red cars are stopped more often” to “red cars are more likely to get into accidents.” As Insurance.com points out, this is all nonsense.

However, this does not prevent people from believing in it. According to an Insure.com poll last year, 46 percent of 2,000 licensed drivers think red cars are more expensive to insure because they are stopped more often.

However, they are doubly wrong.

Not only does color have nothing to do with auto insurance rates , but the risk of a particular model is not determined by the number of tickets its owners receive.

As one expert noted in the article, when you fill out an insurance application, you are not even asked what color your car is. And while carriers ask for your VIN, your car’s color is not a factor in this code.
