Disable This Animation to Make the Windows 10 Start Menu Open Faster

Windows 10’s new Start Menu is pretty damn useful . However, it doesn’t really matter if the download takes forever. If you find that the menu on your computer is a little sluggish, you can turn off the opening animation.

As Into Windows notes, while the new Start Menu animation is great, it can slow down slower computers. Disabling them will help make the menu more responsive. To disable them, follow these steps:

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type sysdm.cpl and press Enter.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, go to the “Advanced” tab.
  4. In the “Performance” section, click “Settings”.
  5. Deselect the Animate Windows When Minimizing and Maximizing check box.

Now, when you open the Start menu, it should appear instantly (although any live tiles you have will still animate as usual). It might save you just a second or two, but on slower machines, that speed can make the difference between a smooth and frustrating experience.
