Beware of These Strange Laws When Traveling to Other Countries
It’s easy to stand out as a tourist if you don’t follow the social norms of a country’s culture. Plus, there are some seemingly harmless habits that can actually get you a little more troublesome. Smarter Travel is breaking eleven strange laws in other countries that tourists should be aware of.
To be clear, this is not a list of obscure, outdated laws like “donkeys cannot be fed carrots on Wednesdays” or something like that. These are laws that are actively enforced and can really affect you. For instance:
- The United Arab Emirates has laws against public kissing. You could have been fined, and a couple of years ago, a married couple was sent to prison .
- In Venice, Italy, you can be fined for feeding pigeons . The law came into force in 2008, fines started from 50 euros.
- In cities like Paris and Madrid, you can be fined for throwing away your metro ticket. You will need it to get out of the station, and many tourists throw it away before they reach the exit, without being able to prove that they bought the ticket. There are usually signs warning of this, but some travelers are still taken by surprise. Before visiting any city, you’ll want to know how their public transport works.
Of course, this list is a great reminder to research key information about any country before you travel. Some of these laws are fairly well known, but some may take you by surprise. Check out the full list of Smarter Travel at the link below.
