If You Never Knew You Needed It, Don’t Buy It
You go to the store to buy something from your list when you come across something great that you never knew existed. How cute! But if you never knew that you needed it, then today you still don’t need it.
As the personal finance blog Enemy of Debt notes, this tendency to buy things we didn’t plan on can drain our finances severely. This is also not surprising. Retailers can trick your brain into thinking you need something. However, if you only buy the items that were on your list to begin with, you never have to worry about overspending:
Be a conscientious sponsor. Take time to reflect on your purchases. Be selfish about your money and value your purchase for your life. If you can do that, I think you will find yourself only buying things that really make your life better, and a little extra money in your wallet.
If, while browsing through the store, you find something that you think is really worth your money, add it to your list. If you will still take care of it the next time you come, then it might be worth picking it up after all. At least then it’s a planned purchase, not an impulse purchase that you might regret.
