“The Secret of Being Loved Is to Love Others.”
Everyone wants to be liked, but it seems that some people are liked more than others. The secret of how to please people: to please other people.
Glennon Doyle Melton describes in Momasteri a walk with his girls to visit cats at the Society for the Protection of Animals. In particular, everyone was drawn to one kitten, and the reason is quite simple: the kitten seemed to like the girls, and he approached them to play.
While not a direct quote, the secret to liking is to please other people:
I really, really think that the secret of love is love. And the secret to being interesting is to be interested. And the secret to having a friend is to be a friend.
Why don’t we want to believe it? We insist that we need to be the smartest kitten, or the most interesting kitten, or the most successful kitten, or the most beautiful kitten in order to get people’s attention. But maybe not. Maybe we just need to show a little interest. Maybe the surest way to please people is to just love people.
The secret to success is making more friends.
This doesn’t mean you have to become an extroverted believer or pretend to be. But don’t be afraid to take the first step.
