Experimenting Leads to Growth Even When It Fails
Improving your life requires experimentation, whether it’s productivity, personal finance, health, or whatever. Even if you end up losing, you will probably learn something.
You’ve probably heard “don’t be afraid of failure” before, but Budgets Are Sexy takes that lesson and reduces it to the little micro-experiments we do all the time. Maybe it’s a 52-week money problem , or maybe it’s trying to wake up half an hour earlier. Even if these experiments fail after a few weeks or months, you will probably still get something out of it – be it a few extra dollars in your bank account or knowing that the hell you need sleep.
As the article Budgets Is Sexy says, Experimenting = Taking Action = Growing:
I also experimented with paying off my mortgage faster (worked for a year, then crashed and burned), collected $ 2.00 bills to save more (last 3 months?), Spending months without spending (best $$ experiment ever! ), Being better off with charity (started a project that gave out $ 90,000 in 12 months) and even keeping track of every dollar spent on my child (worked until baby # 2 arrived;)).
As you can see, I didn’t always succeed in the end, but you can bet with your sweet ass that I’m better off trying. Because, as opposed to simply extracting knowledge by experimenting with money, it usually happens that you leave with an extra dollar in your pocket 🙂 So this is really a win-win.
So do not postpone your experiments for New Year’s decisions . Try to internalize a new little habit now – if it works, you will improve your life a little. If not, then you’ve at least taken a step towards it.
