This Checklist Explains How to Properly Store Your Gas Mower for the Winter.
When the weather starts to cool down, the equipment you use for yard work changes from mowers to rakes. This checklist will show you how to safely store your lawnmower in the fall and winter so that it is in good shape when you need it next spring.
Disconnect the spark plug before starting the process to prevent the windrower from accidentally starting. Then take care of each of these parts of your lawn mower:
- Empty the gas tank . This is the most important thing, as gas left over for several months can damage the rubber and plastic parts of your mower.
- Clean the undercarriage . To do this, you will need to remove the blade. Use heavy-duty gardening or work gloves to protect your hands. Use a metal brush and putty knife to scrape off dried grass, dirt, and other debris.
- Change oil if necessary (4-stroke engine). Reinstall the mower blade. You can either sharpen the blade before reinstalling it, or you can sharpen it in the spring when you’re ready to use the mower again.
- Replace the air filter and clean the cooling fins .
If you are unsure of how to safely remove any of these parts or where they are on your lawnmower, google your lawnmower manual so you can refer to it. To see photo illustrations of each step, click on the link below.
