Write! a Distraction-Free Text Editor With the Features You Want
Windows: Finding a good text editor can be tricky. Some lack basic functionality like spell checker, while others are so heavy that they can be text editors. Write! is a new app that is currently in beta testing that works perfectly and delivers the features you really find useful, without the hassle (or bloat) you don’t need.
Write is great and has an interface that’s perfect for Windows 10 (or Windows 8 for that matter). You can choose the interface of your choice: a tabbed interface for multiple documents (although you can only see one at a time), a simple borderless window for writing and taking notes with no distractions, or a heavier Word-style interface that includes menus and toolbars. Write! also includes automatic spell checker, dark mode and light mode according to your preference, customizable autocomplete that can learn to complete your words for you, many keyboard shortcuts and key commands to save you time, Markdown support, Wiki and Textile syntax and performance counters for things like pages, word counts, and more that you can set as goals.
The app also automatically saves your work all the time, so you don’t have to worry about doing it yourself. If you sign up for an account (which you will need to do to download the app) Write! It will also automatically save your folders and documents to the Internet so you can access them from any other computer. You also get unlimited undo, so pressing Ctrl + Z even after closing and opening a document – or even switching to another computer – effectively undoes the last action in the document. You can also organize your documents into “sessions,” which, like saving a session in Chrome or Firefox, are available to open, close, and reopen on other computers.
Write! Windows only now, OS X and Linux versions of the app coming soon. Some of the banner features (such as cloud save and unlimited cancellation) are free for “early adopters” (that is, everyone who subscribes right now), while everything else will be free forever. In the future, the service plans to introduce “Pro” accounts that will use some of these connected features.
