Google Wallet Is Getting a New, Simpler App, Likely in Preparation for Android Pay
Android: If you use Google Wallet (perhaps if you’ve ever paid for something on Google Play), your app will get a little weirder. Google has released its second Google Wallet app in the Play Store. Though it probably won’t last that long.
The new Google Wallet app, which has a slightly different icon and the word “New” in its name, is likely to eventually replace the old Google Wallet app. Instead of handling mobile payments like the old Google Wallet app did (and continues to do), this new version will only handle things like your Google Wallet balance and transaction history.
As we learned in May, Google will release Android Pay soon . Android Pay appears to be the new home for paying with your phone (if that’s the kind of thing that’s your thing). It might replace the old Google Wallet app, or it might have a third Play Store entry that we haven’t seen yet. We’ll find out more as soon as it falls. However, for now, yes, there are two Google Wallet apps in the Play Store. You can check the new version below.
