Update Your Graphics Drivers: This Can Make a Big Difference in Games

We already told you that you should update your graphics card drivers if you are playing on a PC. But how much do they actually increase productivity? Linus Tech Tips is doing a little experiment to find out.

When NVIDIA and AMD update their drivers, they don’t just fix bugs or add small features. They often improve performance – sometimes dramatically, especially in recent games. This means that you can seriously improve your productivity simply by clicking the Refresh button.

Linus Tech Tips has tested an older NVIDIA GTX 480 graphics card with four different games and five different driver versions over the past four years. Some games saw performance up to 10% better, while others (like The Witcher 3) saw a 30% improvement in a couple of years. It’s pretty phenomenal.

After a few years, this performance gain starts to decline, but if that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will happen. (This is also another reason to buy games after they’ve been out for a year or two – not only will they be cheaper, they’ll perform better!) We’d love to see them include an AMD card for comparison, but we’d imagine AMD should in a similar way – after all, driver updates are one of the best ways to compete between AMD and NVIDIA after a card is released. Watch the video to find out more and update these drivers!
