Treat the Job You Hate As a Workout to Move on to Something Better.
Let’s be honest. “Do what you love” is great if you can change that, but almost everyone will have to find a job they hate at some point. However, if you don’t want to stay there, treat the job as if it’s just preparation for the best.
As the personal finance blog Dividend Mantra points out, hate work can go in two ways: either it slowly pulls you into stagnation, or it can prompt you to find something better. One of the key ways to avoid the former is to treat your job as learning. If you use this job to gain useful skills that can be applied elsewhere (perhaps looking for alternatives ), you’ll be less likely to slip away from the thought of simply taking the job:
If you have a job that you hate, use it to your advantage. Use it to light a fire … But don’t sit in boiling water for too long. Don’t wait for the chains to get too heavy to break, to pull well. You have the power to be free, and perhaps even faster than you think. Make sure you use this every single day.
The key benefit of this mindset is that if you’re planning to move on to something better, you can spend your time learning skills that will come in handy elsewhere. This is also something you can do, even if you cannot afford to quit your job. While it’s nice to think that everyone can just quit their jobs and find a better job, you have to pay the bills. That said, if you’re planning to leave one day and use the time in between to learn new skills, it never hurts.
