A common complaint among job seekers is that you seemed to be interviewed, but after a few weeks, you still haven’t heard from the company. Minor signs during an interview can tell you that the hiring manager has already decided that you are not the right fit, for example, when you are only asked simple questions.
On his blog, Glassdoor notes four signs that the interviewer may have already made a decision about you and is just taking action. Easy questions are the first sign:
It may seem like a dream come true, but when the interviewer only asks you simple questions, chances are you are not being seriously considered for the position. More challenging questions – those that make candidates think for themselves and solve problems they might face at work – allow interviewers to assess how well-prepared candidates are for the job and determine if they are suitable for the organization.
If you find yourself constantly answering simple questions that prevent you from connecting your experience with the skills required for the job, this could mean that the interviewer does not consider you a strong enough candidate to explore further.
For these and other signs, including the interviewer not telling you about the rest of the hiring process or asking when you’re ready to start, Glassdoor offers suggestions to turn the interview around. For simple questions like:
What to do about it: Be persistent. Let your interviewer know you have a question and say something like, “In my last position, I was often required to do XYZ. I noticed that this position requires a similar experience. How does XYZ play a role in day-to-day responsibilities? “
Long interviews with tough questions are probably not something you would like to endure, but they can be the best sign that the hiring manager is interested in you.
