Turn Your Windows 10 PC Into a Wi-Fi Hotspot
Windows: If you have a Windows computer with a wired Internet connection, you can share it with other devices. You can do this with a little command line trick to turn your desktop into a Wi-Fi hotspot.
While this was technically possible for a while , the process has changed over the years. You can check out the new steps for Windows 10 in the video above from the tech blog Techniqued, or follow these steps:
- Press Win + X to open the Power User Settings menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
- Enter the following command, replacing the SSID and key values with the network name and password you want:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=AdHoc key=password
- Run the following command to start the network:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
- Find “View Network Connections” in the Start menu.
- Right click on the main Ethernet connection and select Properties.
- On the Sharing tab, select the Allow other network users to connect to the Internet on this computer check box.
- From the drop-down list below the box above, select a network connection that currently has Internet access. Click OK.
At this point, you will have a completely new Wi-Fi network connected to your home Internet. Be aware that this will only work as long as the Windows computer running the network is active. It is also not a complete replacement for a normal router, but it can help you in a pinch.
