Performance Tests Show 16GB of RAM Is Overkill for Most People
Adding extra memory isn’t the performance boost it used to be , but how much RAM is enough? TechSpot compared the performance of applications on a system with 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB and concluded that 16GB provides a slight advantage over 8GB of memory, even when programs are using more than 8GB of memory.
TechSpot tested a Windows 10 desktop with two browsers and more than a dozen tabs open, plus Postbox, Photoshop, Microsoft Word and Excel, Dropbox and other programs running in the background to find the differences between using 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB GB. random access memory. Even with demanding programs that take up 12GB of system memory, 16GB didn’t improve performance that much.
Even playing games with excessive memory consumption in Chrome running in the background (with 65 active tabs open!) Has little impact on high memory performance due to the way Windows handles system memory.
The only circumstance in which 16 GB was a significant advantage over 8 GB was compressing a huge file using 7-Zip, but the authors note that compressing this amount of data is an extreme and unlikely scenario.
While many tests show that 4GB of RAM was sufficient , 8GB is the best choice these days according to TechSpot. 16GB of storage may not cost much more than 8GB, you probably won’t see significant benefits from this minor upgrade unless you are a power user (like working with virtual machines or editing videos).
