Get Rid of the Clutter by Collecting Everything You Need, Unpack Only What You Need
How many things in your home do you really need? What could you afford to get rid of if you really wanted to? If you want to know, collect everything you have. Treat it like you are moving. Then, unpack only what you need. See what remains in these boxes in a month.
As the aptly titled minimalism blog The Minimalists points out, you probably have a bunch of trash in your home. These things don’t really add value to your life, but you still have to take care of them. If you want to know which things you need and which ones are crap, pack it all up and unpack it only as needed:
We decided to pack all my things as if I were moving. And then I unpacked only those things that I needed for the next three weeks … After three weeks, 80% of my things were still in these boxes. I’m just sitting there. No access. I looked at these boxes and couldn’t even remember what was in most of them. Everything that was supposed to make me happy was not doing its job. I donated and sold it all.
What to do with the rest is up to you. You can donate unnecessary items, sell them, or simply use all those piles of boxes as a reminder of what you really need. It’s up to you. However, this exercise will help you see what you really “need.” The next time you move into a new home, for example, if you know you can get less space, you won’t be wasting that much money on that unused room .
