Use This Rule to Determine How Many Places You Should Have in the Living Room.
When people come to you, it’s good if everyone has a place to sit besides the floor. This basic rule of thumb for home design will help you determine how much comfortable seating you should aim for in your living room.
Have you ever had people come to dinner and to the movies and then end up on the floor because you didn’t have enough seating? Apartment Therapy’s Taryn Wilford offers a simple rule of thumb, based on home designer Elaine Griffin’s rule , to avoid this problem next time:
Number of seats in the living room ≥ number of seats in the dining room
If your dining table has room for five people, try to have five comfortable seating areas in the living room. This could mean a sofa for three with a couple of sun loungers, or maybe a larger sofa that seats four with a reclining back on the side. Obviously, in smaller homes this rule will be more difficult, but you can simply flip your dining chairs over and use the same seats.
