How to Measure the Frame Correctly When Trimming Beveled Corners

Picture frames and boxes require two planks to be joined together to create a right angle. The cleanest way to do this is to cut each board at a 45 degree angle, which is called a bevel cut. Here is the formula for determining the length of each board.

First, measure the size of the glass or photo you want to surround with a frame. Then measure the width (facing you) of your chosen frame material. Double this width and add it to the length and width of the glass you want to frame. These numbers will be the length and width of your frame material.

For example, suppose you want to frame an 8×10 photo with 1/2 “wide wood. This means that the length of the two sides of the frame must be reduced to 11 “and the length of the other sides must be reduced to 9”.

After trimming the corners at a 45 degree angle, the frame material will be the perfect size to fit your photo.
