Prepare an Action Plan Ahead of Time With This Over-Drunk Friend.
Being a good party host is a huge job , including dealing with nasty scripts. When one of your guests drinks too much, think about how you will handle it ahead of time so you don’t panic when it eventually happens.
When drawing up a plan, several points must be taken into account:
- What is the setting for the party? If you’re having a small dinner party, dealing with one drunk friend without the others knowing can be difficult. You want to avoid embarrassing your friend, but if their safety (or the safety of others) is at stake, you may have to. Throwing a large, less structured party will make it easier for you to deal with a drunken guest.
- How often does this friend get drunk? If your friend is always drunk at a party, you may need to talk to him about his behavior beforehand.
- How will your friend react to being dragged aside? You know your friends best. If you think your friend will be upset if you talk to him while he is drunk, you need to make a more subtle plan to cut him off from drinking.
- What if someone is so drunk that they need to crash after a party? Hosting a party takes a lot of time and energy, but you should be prepared to host a little longer if necessary. Don’t let people who are overly drunk go home as they can get into an accident when driving or get lost when using public transport. Prepare a spare pillow and blanket for those who need to sleep on your couch instead of trying to head home in an unsafe environment.
Once you’ve thought about how your friend and other guests will react, you have a few options. Ask a friend to look after the drunk friend so you can cut him off when needed. Take your friend aside to chat about not getting drunk. You can also go for a more subtle approach and serve less (or no) alcohol.
Whichever route you choose, the main thing is to know what your plan is before the party starts. You will be more relaxed and able to focus on pleasing your guests if you already know how to deal with a friend who is too drunk.
