How to Create the Perfect Sex Playlist (Plus Some Song Guidelines)
The right soundtrack can turn sex from good to overwhelming. But if you’ve ever met someone who included an apparently carefully crafted “sex playlist,” you also know that music can make your meeting a little awkward. Here’s how to achieve the former, not the latter.
Before we even get into choosing the right jams, let’s talk about why playing music during sex is a good idea. Simply put, music adds a unique layer of stimulation. He invites another feeling of yours to the party. Music can help us feel more connected to our body and make our movements more sensual. Music can also capture the different moods that can accompany sex: passion, anger, playfulness, intensity, romance, melancholy, and so on.
On a more practical level, music can drown out the strange noises that often accompany sex, fill awkward silences, and prevent your roommate from hearing what you are doing.
What it takes for a good sex song
When looking for potential songs for your playlists, think about your song history. Some songs evoke memories that we don’t want to be distracted by during sex (like the album you and your ex listened to all summer). You can also avoid “earworm” songs or songs that you can’t help but sing along (if you don’t mind breaking the song in the middle of your speaking). You are looking for songs that will convey a certain mood to you and make you feel in tune with your sexual self.
How to make a playlist
Sex comes in many different flavors, so creating different playlists that reflect your unique mood can be fun. At least you can make a romantic sex playlist and a hot sex playlist. Otherwise, you are only limited by how much time you want to spend on it. If you’re feeling inspired, put together a playlist for lazy Sunday sex after brunch. Or the one when your irresistible but insane ex-ass calls you.
When it comes to playing your playlist, I am a proponent of the shuffle feature. I really think it’s best to pick all your songs because randomly picking Pandora or Spotify that you don’t really like can ruin the mood. But if you figure out the exact order of your songs, sex can feel overly rehearsed, especially if you’re sleeping with someone relatively new. You may feel pressured to time the meeting based on how you imagined it when you created the playlist. As a partner, it also seems a little odd to know that someone has specially arranged these tracks to listen to when having sex with you.
