The Truth About Bottled Water Shelf Life (and How Water Goes Bad)

Bottled water is sold with an expiration date on the label, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t drink it after it’s expired. This video explains how water can become undrinkable and when it can otherwise be drunk.

If you’ve ever left a glass of water overnight and sipped the next day, you’ve probably noticed that it tastes a little odd. You might suspect the water was starting to deteriorate, but this video from YouTube channel DNews explains that the bad taste is actually caused by the water being exposed to air, making it a little more acidic and home to things like dust and microbes. It will probably be possible to drink for another day or so until it is outside, but the drinking will get coarser over time.

However, bottled water prevents dust, oxygen and germs from entering the water. This means that, according to the CDC, bottled water can be safely consumed for a very long time if it is stored out of direct sunlight (or high temperatures), away from pesticides and gasoline, and the bottle is not damaged . Basically, you can ignore the expiration date of bottled water; just make sure it is kept safe (and that you receive it every day ).
