No one likes to be terrorized by nightmares or bad dreams, but scientists assure us that they are actually the key to mental well-being.

The New York Magazine video above explains that our brains turn our fears into hellish stories, which we then experience as memories. Since we seem to have actually experienced these “memories,” they seem to be in the past and we can better distance ourselves from our vague worries and fears.

So if you do not see Freddy Krueger in your dreams, do not be afraid of the night of bad dreams.
