Banish Fridge Funk With Cotton Swab and Vanilla Extract

As a lover of sulfuric and fermented foods, my refrigerator often smells less than pleasant. The baking soda dish can absorb some odors, but certain foods, such as the horseradish seasoning tray, suppress this frail sodium bicarbonate. This method, on the other hand, works like a charm and uses what you probably have.

As a knight of shining stainless steel, Bon Appetit has amassed some of his staff’s best advice on how to deal with the awful fridge funk. My favorite is the following from Ashley Halpern, their Special Projects editor, because it is very simple and I already have all the material:

We mask the stench of kimchi and other strange odors with cotton balls soaked in vanilla extract, placed in a shot glass and placed in the back of the refrigerator. It’s fucking magic!

What is your preferred method of getting rid of kitchen odors? Is there an actual cleaning? I hear it helps.
