Follow Your Opportunities First, Then Apply Your Passion

“Follow your passion” is not always the best advice . If you need to get carried away with your job before you start, you can leave many opportunities behind. Instead, start seizing the opportunities you have and show your passion.

As the business blog Entrepreneur explains, not everyone has every opportunity equally. Those who grew up working in restaurants will find it easier to open their own than those who have never stepped into the kitchen. Your circumstances give you a clear set of strengths and weaknesses. Instead of choosing passion first and trying to cram it into your life, take a look at your options and ask yourself where you can apply your passion:

Zappos.com is a business where passion has followed opportunity but has not been the starting point. I can’t imagine Tony Shi is more passionate about shoes than most women I know. However, he is totally passionate about the customer service that has helped propel this business to the pinnacle of success.

If you do what you love and can turn it into a profitable business, that’s great. On the other hand, if you, like most of us, must find a job before life gives you the perfect one, start exploring the opportunities available to you. What do people in your community need? Can you provide this? If you find something that someone else needs, you may find that your passion can follow.
