Use an Old, Cheap Word Processor As a Distraction-Free Writing Tool
It’s $ 19 junk, but a portable word processor helps you focus on your writing and nothing else.
Design for Hackers author David Kadavi explains several of the benefits of using a tool like this. It doesn’t connect to the internet (so it’s not distracting), but it can connect to your computer via USB to download your recordings. Since only four lines of text are displayed at a time, you only focus on what you write, not what you just wrote. And since editing sucks on the device, you don’t edit while you write. You just write.
The AlphaSmart 3000 is no longer in production but is still available for purchase on Amazon. You can use other similar old school word processors instead. Sure, there are plenty of non- distracting writing apps that you can install to get a similar environment, but having a separate physical writing-only device can make you more productive.
