Try to Enter a Strange Subject to Read Emails

If you’re writing to someone who doesn’t know you yet, reading the letters can be daunting. To make your message stand out, don’t be afraid to describe the topic a little weird.

As the writing tips site Copyblogger explains, people tend to scan their inboxes quickly and won’t read something unless it really stands out. There are many ways to make your message more interesting, but one of them is to make it weird. If you can get the reader to say, “Wait, what?” you are already ahead of the curve:

Just like in the subject line of the email I shared at the beginning, which said, “Don’t fuck with me.” This is pretty weird and grabs your attention. This is unusual … And of course you can come up with an unusual statement or word.

Of course, being weird is like asking someone out on a date: confidence and style matter. If you awkwardly add profanity to the subject line and then spend your first paragraph embarrassingly explaining why you cheated on them, you quickly lose interest. It’s not about being weird or provocative for your own sake. Rather, allow yourself to go beyond the copy box. If your message is ignored anyway, you can allow some of your natural creativity to emerge.
