Get the Most Out of Your Vacation by Focusing on a Unique Experience

A vacation should always make you happy, but just as well, you can get as much out of it as possible. This psychological trick will make you feel even happier when you get back from vacation.

You’ve probably heard that buying experiences is one of the best ways to buy happiness, but there is a catch. According to Elizabeth Dunn, author of Happy Money: The Science of Happy Spending , the more unique you can make your vacation, the better you will relate to it later. Dunn explains to Jesse Singhala on the Science of Us blog for New York Magazine:

… it’s worth looking for unique vacation experiences – things that can’t be compared to those of your friends. “Experience seems [most] rewarding when it provides a unique opportunity that is not easily comparable to other options,” she said. For ultimate happiness, you don’t want to go back and talk about your vacation with friends and find out that “their cruise boat was bigger and had seven pools, while we have four.”

Basically, people like to know that they have experienced something that others have not seen. It gives you something interesting to talk about in a conversation and makes your experience special. If possible, plan what you know not many people do when traveling. Even if you’re planning on taking a popular vacation (like a cruise), find ways to make it unique and you’ll be back in the real world feeling better about your entire experience.
