“Hypoallergenic” Foods Can Still Cause Allergies

If you have sensitive skin, it is tempting to trust hypoallergenic jewelry or lotions. But that term may not mean what you think: there is no legal definition of “hypoallergenic”, so it is possible that these products contain something that you are allergic to.

According to the FDA , the term “means whatever a particular company wants.” For example, no testing is required and there is no list of common allergens to exclude. Hypoallergenic pets can cause less dandruff, but they can still be allergic.
