Water Aerobics Is Harder Than It Looks (and Feels)

Don’t let the dumbbells fool you; water aerobics can kick your ass. Because its low impact load is popular with injured athletes and seniors, training depends on the amount of effort you can put in. The Marines even use it and call their version “tougher than running.”

Take these Styrofoam dumbbells, for example: they don’t look so silly when you realize that your job is to push them down while the water resists you. Fit Bottomed Girls’ Erin lists a few more surprises:

2. You may not realize how difficult it is! Water is deceiving. You stay beautiful and calm and don’t realize how much you sweat. Thus, you may not be aware of how much you are working until you get out of the pool and feel tired in all your limbs.

3. The current is working against you. I never thought that swimming pools have currents, but when there are a lot of people moving in the pool, the waves start to sway. Some exercises, such as leg raises, pose an additional challenge to balance because you are trying to keep the water from moving.

7. Some technique is required. I was surprised that some of the movements required some training. They say it was hard going back until one of the women gave me advice on how to use the dumbbell to my advantage.

Water fitness lessons can be found in almost any gym, so if you are looking for something new, take a look at them. And check out Erin’s full article at the link below.
