Check If Your Garage Is Vulnerable to Burglary, the Doors of Which Swing Open in Seconds

Garage door systems are useless if they can be easily opened with a hacked child’s toy. Unfortunately, many garage door openers are vulnerable. This video can help you determine if you have, and what to do if you do.

First, a little background: security researcher Sami Kamkar found that garage doors that use an unsafe “fixed code” system can be easily opened. He created a device called OpenSesame (from an old Mattel toy called IM ME) that can try every possible combination for this garage door in seconds.

Garage doors that do not use “fixed code” wireless transmission but instead use “rolling code” are not vulnerable to this attack. In the video above, Kamkar shows how to test the remote.

If you want to secure your garage, you’ll have to replace the opener, which costs between $ 150 and $ 250, but it’s a relatively simple DIY project.
