Catch Drywall Debris With a Basketball While Drilling the Ceiling
Drilling through the ceiling for fixtures or fans can be challenging. Drywall and ceiling debris can accumulate all over stairs and floors, adding an extra step for cleaning. This simple trick traps debris and is especially useful when drilling multiple holes.
Blow out an old or unused basketball and cut it in half at the seam with a utility knife. Then drill a 1/2 ”hole in the center of one half of the ball and insert a hole saw arbor. The ball catches debris and prevents it from falling on your face or the floor.
As a professional solution, you can buy the Milwaukee Hole Cutter for $ 25, which includes a trash screen. Their debris protection is similar to a plastic cake tray (which you can also use, but won’t be as durable or effective).
