Use These Questions to Start a “money Talk” With Your Partner.
Talking openly about money in a relationship is important – and difficult. Start a conversation by comparing your answers with your partner’s to these questions.
You probably won’t agree with everything, but at least you can understand why each of you answered the way you did. Nicole Weaver of The Billfold offers questions that worked for her and her boyfriend:
- What are you saving the most on now?
- What is the most important thing for you to have a budget for?
- How often should we reevaluate our goals (both short term and long term)?
- After you move, do you think it is important that we talk about “big purchases”? If so, how much do you consider a big purchase?
- What is the contingency plan after the move in case one of us is out of work?
These are just a few of a much larger list. Pick ones that are appropriate for the stage of your relationship and topics that you haven’t discussed with your partner yet. If none of this sounds right, you can make your own list (and ask your partner to add their own questions). After this initial conversation about money, schedule regular financial “dates” to make sure the two of you are on the same page at all times. … Nicole’s full list of questions can be found in the full post at the link below.
