Houseplants are excellent indoor air purifiers, but some are more effective than others at filtering out pollutants and toxic chemicals in the air. According to NASA research, this infographic shows the best air filtration installations.
NASA researchers set out to find the best ways to clean the air in space stations. Their Clean Air study found the following plants were effective in removing benzene, formaldehyde, trichlorethylene, xylene and ammonia from the air, chemicals that cause health effects such as headaches and eye irritation.
As we noted earlier , these plants have other benefits as well, but in the graph below from Love the Garden, you can immediately see the plants that make the best natural air filters. According to NASA research, there should be at least one plant for every 100 square feet of a home or office. (A snake plant or mother- in -law’s tongue , by the way, is quite hardy, although not entirely unconvincing .)
