MacID Will Unlock Your Mac Using Your IPhone or IPad and Your Fingerprint
OS X / iOS: If you have a relatively recent Mac and iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch equipped with TouchID, Apple’s fingerprint reader security feature, MacID allows you to turn your mobile device into a dongle that can unlock your Mac – when you are nearby and, of course, they want to use it.
Once installed, you’ll pair your iOS device (or Apple Watch) with your Mac via the app. From there, you can tell the MacID to automatically lock your Mac when you are not in close proximity, to automatically lock and unlock when you leave or return (expect all devices battery impact if you turn this on, but this is handy ) or simply lock or unlock your device manually from your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. Once you get back to your computer, instead of entering your password, you can use the TouchID on your mobile device to authenticate, unlock your Mac, and get back to work. MacID can connect to multiple of your iOS devices with multiple Macs if you want, send text from the clipboard from your Mac to your iOS device, control your Mac’s sound (which means you can change the volume, play / pause / skip tracks in iTunes and Spotify.), and more. You can even set a custom unlock pattern for your Mac if you like, meaning you have to touch a specific pattern on the trackpad before your computer unlocks.
Of course, MacID isn’t the only tool that can do this. Earlier we mentioned UnlockID , which is similar, but MacID adds a few more features. You can download the iOS app from the iTunes App Store (link below) for $ 4, and the companion Mac app is free. Remember, you must have a Mac with Bluetooth LE for MacID to work.
