Create a Warm, Low-Light Workspace for Creativity

It’s no secret that your environment can influence your creativity . If you’re sitting at a brightly lit desk in a cold office listening to loud music and wondering why the next flash of genius isn’t coming to you, try swapping that environment for a warm, softly lit room. Maybe even put in some moderate background noise.

As productivity blog Buffer Social explains, different types of environments can influence how our brains work for different tasks. Loud music, bright lights, and a slightly chilly office are all great for maintaining energy and increasing focus. However, creative inspiration often comes when your brain is allowed to relax and move freely. To inspire yourself to come up with great ideas, create a comfortable, warm space, preferably with less bright lights and some softer vibe.

The environment may not impose ideas on your brain, but it removes physical distractions that distract your mind from your ideas. For example, you don’t need a warm room because you can’t tell when you’re cold. Just one less thing to get in the way:

The problem is not only that you are uncomfortable at low temperatures, but that you are more distracted. If you are cold, you spend a significant part of your energy just to keep warm. Thus, much less energy is spent on concentrating on creative work.

Of course, everyone has different preferences, so don’t feel like you have to force yourself to work in a specific workspace that works for someone else. However, if you find it difficult to come up with ideas in your office, it may be because the environment you are in is too annoying for your brain to function freely.
