Store Cilantro in the Refrigerator Upright With Water so It Stays in the Last Month
We have already discussed how you can prolong the short life of fresh herbs by freezing the herbs on a flat surface or drying them in the microwave . But let’s be honest: it would be better at all if we could just find a way to extend the shelf life of fresh herbs in the first place.
Fortunately, someone has. Our favorite cook at Serious Eats, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, is testing five different herbal storage methods to determine which is most effective for a variety of herbs, from delicate leafy to hardy. The most innovative way for us was the way of storing delicate leaves of cilantro, parsley and mint. He’s writing:
Store delicate herbs by trimming the base of the stems and removing any discolored or wilted leaves. Transfer them to a large jug of water at the bottom. Place a lid on the jar (if applicable) or cover the top of the jar with an inverted plastic bag sealed with an elastic band. Keep refrigerated.
Shocking Verdict: When stored this way, Kenji was able to keep the delicate, wilting-prone cilantro fresh for 51 days . It’s over seven weeks! More information about this method, as well as other suggested storage methods for herbs such as thyme, basil, and garlic, can be found at the link below.
