Grate Ginger With Plastic Wrap
Grated ginger is useful in many dishes, but grating it can be tricky. The solution is simple: wrap a grater with plastic wrap and rub the ginger with it. You might think it would tear, but it won’t, and when you’re done, just lift up the plastic and remove the minced ginger, juice, and whatever.
The video above from OXO shows you how it’s done, but it’s actually a clue I stumbled upon while watching an old episode of Julia Child’s film In Julia’s Kitchen with the Chefs . It’s as easy as it sounds – just cover the grater with the plastic wrap you will use for the ginger and then rub as much as you like. Instead of going through the holes, the ginger will collect on the plastic, and when you have as much as you want, just peel off the plastic wrap and scrape off the grated ginger and liquid that is filled with ginger flavor.
You might think the plastic wrap would rip or break on the sharp surface of the trowel, but it won’t (well, if you have any decent plastic wrap). I’ve done this myself a few times and it never fails – and it’s even easier than using one of our favorite kitchen tools – the versatile microplane .
