Cutting Metal With Woodworking Tools and Cut-Off Wheels
Plasma torches and oxy-acetylene torches are the preferred method for cutting sheet metal. But if you are not armed with these tools and still need to cut steel, you have several other options.
Abrasive cut-off wheels are used to cut metal on an angle grinder, but they are not the best option for cutting flat metal sheets. The circular saw is suitable for a 7 “diameter cut-off wheel. Find an old and outdated circular saw as it won’t last long due to debris.
We don’t recommend doing this, but if you’re really desperate, the gentleman in the video above claims to be using a 10-inch cut-off wheel with his table saw to make even more precise cuts. Again, he recommends using a cheaper saw for something like this and prevents sparks from flying all over the place as the blade will spin. Sounds like a great way to start a fire, so we advise against it.
Finally, a short cut-off reciprocating saw can be positioned vertically over a sheet of metal and used as a jigsaw. The jigsaw blade is too brittle to cut through sheet metal.
Always wear safety glasses and gloves when using the cut-off wheel.
