Substitute Shallots With a Little Boiling Water

It’s easy for me to remember to grab pantry staples like garlic and onions from the store, but other pantries aren’t always so lucky; in particular, I always forget the shallots . Luckily, if you’re making a recipe that calls for shallots and your kitchen is temporarily unavailable, we’ve learned an easy substitute for it.

Inspired by one of Julia Child’s advice “ Mastering the Art of French Culinary Arts,” Dana Velden of The Kitchn has come up with a super-smart replacement for shallots:

I have modified [Julia Child’s] tip over the years by simply placing chopped onions in a strainer and holding it over the sink, pouring the freshly boiled water for about 15 seconds.
