Google Begins Rolling Out Trusted Voice Smart Blocking
Google already has several smart home screen lock options, including Trusted Places or Devices. Now it adds a new option: trusted voice. If you say “Ok Google,” your phone may unlock, but someone else’s voice won’t unlock it.
Smart Lock is more of a convenience feature than a security feature. Thus, Google will warn you if you try to activate it that this method is less secure than a PIN, password, or pattern lock. If someone has a recording of your voice saying “Ok Google,” they could theoretically unlock your device.
However, if you don’t have smart international spies tracking you while recording your voice in order to get physical access to your phone, this method might be handy. You can unlock your device with a voice command and jump straight to giving it other commands if you want. As Android Police notes, this feature is still rolling out to some users via Play Services, so it’s unclear how many people will have access to this option in what time frame. If it shows up for you, give it a try and let our other commenters know how it works!
