Grate Ginger Before Freezing for Quick Cooking

Ginger is one of those ingredients that freeze well. In fact, freezing the ginger makes it easier to peel and grate . Alternatively, freeze it after grating for quicker cooking.

In The Kitchn, they explain the best way to store it in the freezer:

To freeze ginger, first peel and chop or grate. Then place the ginger on a parchment-lined tray. I love to cook teaspoon sized portions. Freeze until firm and transfer to an airtight container. It should be stored for about six months …

They suggest adding these frozen portions directly to recipes if they don’t require defrosting. If desired, you can use both freezer attachments together: freeze the ginger, then grate it and freeze it again. After all, if you’re going to get the grater dirty, you can only do it once.
