Replacing a Broken Sprinkler Head Without Calling a Plumber

Broken irrigation heads should be replaced quickly as they waste water and are ineffective in watering your lawn. However, you don’t need to call a plumber to fix it – you can do it yourself.

If you’re lucky, you can simply remove the broken sprinkler by turning it counterclockwise and screwing on a new one. Your best bet is to bring your broken spray head with you to Home Depot or Lowe’s and pick up a new one.

However, the sprinkler head often breaks at the base and the PVC pipe needs to be replaced. In this case, you need to cut out the broken or cracked section of PVC and replace it with a new one. You will also need a 3/4 sleeve to connect the old pipe to the new 3/4 “PVC elbow and the 3/4 to 1/2” step that will be attached to the sprinkler head.

The only tools needed are a small metal hacksaw to cut the pipe and PVC cement to hold the sections together. Allow the PVC cement to cure for about 10 minutes before passing water through the system for testing.
