Moving Your Wi-Fi Router Even a Couple of Centimeters Can Improve Your Signal

Generally, most technologies are more complex than they seem. For example, your Wi-Fi router might create dark spots with poor reception in your home, depending on your floor plan. You can potentially change these locations by simply nudging your router.

The reason for this is some complex electromagnetic theory (which you can read about in the source), but the bottom line is that when you choose a location for your Wi-Fi router, the signal travels through the rooms of your house. Eventually, however, it will become calm and repetitive. Like the surface of a quiet lake.

If you often find that a certain device, such as a TV or desktop computer, is constantly receiving a bad signal, you can adjust the position of your router. This will cause the signal to be broadcast in a different pattern, which could change where these dark spots appear.

If you’re wondering how this phenomenon works in your home, I’ve created an app that lets you simulate the Wi-Fi signal in your home (assuming you bring your own floor plan) to see where these dark spots might appear. This video also demonstrates this effect in three dimensions. While you may not always have control over where these dark spots occur due to the complexity of their appearance, it does at least provide some insight into why your signal strength can fluctuate so much with seemingly subtle changes.
