The state in which you work may not be the state in which you want to retire. When deciding where you want to spend your golden years, consider the cost of living, taxes and crime rates, and the quality of healthcare when making your decision.

You might want to camp in a neighboring state, make more profit, and find a healthier place to call home.

According to Bankrate.com employees, these four states are the hardest for retirees:

  • Alaska: The low tax rate could not outweigh the high cost of living and high crime rates.
  • West Virginia: Mountain State was listed despite its low cost of living, poor medical care, and low personal happiness.
