Turn Your Raspberry Pi 2 Into a Cheap DIY SteamBox for Home Streaming

The new Raspberry Pi 2 has a lot of potential, but with a little oily it can turn it into a homemade Steam Box that can easily stream your games from your PC to the big screen. In their new show, Possibly Not Safe, Patrick Norton and Michael Hand show you how to customize your show from start to finish.

Possibly Not Safe – This is the new DIY show from Patrick and Michael, who previously introduced you to DIY Tryin, the show we shared earlier . Their new venture off to a big start, with this tutorial on how to use Limelight (an open source implementation from NVIDIA GameStream ) is working on the mighty Pi 2, and paired with NVIDIA GameCenter on a gaming PC.

Update : We have to point out that this is not an official SteamBox, nor does it use SteamOS or home streaming . This is a standalone approach that leverages NVIDIA technology for the same, so you’ll need an NVIDIA card for this project.

You can watch the entire episode (about 10 minutes) above or follow the YouTube link below for step-by-step instructions.

The process itself is pretty simple. Your PC will need an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 600+ graphics card to use GameStream, but as long as you have one, the rest is simple. You will install Rasbian on your Pi and then use LimeLight to connect to your gaming PC. Connect your Pi to your gaming PC, plug in a controller, and start streaming – or essentially play a PC game using your PC’s processing power but displayed on a different screen, like your HDTV.
