Re-Use the Soil to Plant Your Next Plant With a Little Additive
We gardeners are a little obsessed with acquiring new plants. From rare succulents to exotic flowers, the quest never ends. You can fund this obsession by reusing the soil for planting and spending extra money on a new plant rather than soil – just keep these few things in mind.
New potting soil contains the nutrients your plants feed on. Over time, these nutrients can be removed from the soil by healthy plants, leaving you with a less than ideal potting mix to reuse.
By adding a few corrections to the used soil, you can prepare it for use again. The addition of perlite helps lighten the soil and provide drainage and nitrogen levels in the soil can be improved by adding a little fertilizer to the compost . (Be sure to also remove visible weeds, insects, leaves, stones, and other unwanted impurities.)
Avoid reusing the soil that was used to plant tomatoes as they are high-energy plants that siphon most of the nutrients from the soil, and if you are planting seedlings, it is best to use new soil that is pH balanced and leave the used soil for more mature plants.
