Best (and Worst) College Majors for Post-Graduate Recruiting
If you’re in doubt about your college majors, listen: the degree you choose now depends a lot on how long you’re out of work after graduation. According to a recent Georgetown University study, these are fast hiring specialists and others who will help you find a job for a while.
When it comes to graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree, the top three majors for hiring are Natural Resources, Physical Sciences, and Education. The unemployment rate for recent college graduates in these specialties hovers around 5%. On the other hand, the main areas of unemployment are architecture, social sciences and arts. They all have rates of about 10%.
The best news from the survey is that most large companies are seeing steady declines in unemployment following the big recession. It should also be noted, though, that these numbers do not include applicants who are pursuing a specialty degree and are fully employed in another field.
Remember, this is just one of many things to consider, including salary potential, hours worked, and even overall happiness. Many graduates are well aware that their chosen specialty may not lead to fast work, but will bring them significantly more money and make them happier throughout their careers.
