Use Autopilot to Get More Done

There are many decisions to make every day. However, some things are not actually solutions at all. For the chores you need to get done, use rather than avoid running on autopilot.

The productivity blog Barking Up the Wrong Tree explains that we are on autopilot more often than we think. You don’t have to make decisions about how to get started because your brain already knows how to do it. This part of your brain that knows how to get the job done is a powerful tool. And the more mechanical actions you can assign to the autopilot, the better:

In fact, when we’re on autopilot, we get more done. Not having to make decisions requires less willpower. So start building better habits. You do not “decide” to brush your teeth, it’s just what you do, and it’s not a struggle. By having more of these habits, you can get much more done in less time and with a little stress. At first, just try small habits. Link them to things that are already part of your routine.

The advantage of this method is that you can save precious brain power for the decisions you really need to make. Working on autopilot for important tasks can be guilty, but remember that just because something is important does not mean that it is so complex that you cannot develop a routine for it and let it work.
