Treat Your Attention As a Resource to Plan It More Efficiently
In the information age, attention is the currency you spend on content. Most of us are willing to give our attention freely because it’s that simple. However, if you treat your attention as a resource as well as money, you can do more.
Despite how freely we can afford to be distracted, we are limited in what we can pay attention to on a particular day. Social media, TV shows, news sites, and even productivity blogs are all vying for your attention. Before you waste time reading, watching, or listening to something just because it came up in front of you, ask yourself what you would spend your money on if you had to.
Of course, none of this is inherently bad, and it’s not that you feel guilty about relaxing a little on Facebook for a few minutes a day. But most of us don’t think about what to look for. We just pay attention to what it requires. Start defending your attention as if it were a limited resource and you can make better use of your time.
