Keep One Private, Non-Public Diary so You Can Write Better

Writing is a highly personal habit. There are many ways to overcome the writing deadlock , but if you want words to flow and improve the quality of your writing, keep at least one journal that you never intend to show the world.

Advice courtesy of Madeleine L’Engle, author of the award-winning book A Wrinkle in Time . She suggests keeping a diary that you can’t publish, in which you can put unfiltered thoughts. Having an outlet allows you to process what you are thinking or write ideas down without wrapping them in the “right” format or acceptable form.

First, if you want to write, you need to keep an honest, unpublished journal that no one reads but yourself. Where you just write down what you think about life, what you think about things, what you think is fair and what you think is unfair.

You can keep a written or digital journal if it is kept confidential. And of course, while the magazine’s goal is not to filter, if you’re going to write something so offensive that it could threaten your career if exited, be sure to protect it from prying eyes.
